Two months after their breakup, Tommy’s phone flashes with Evan’s contact for the first time.

“Listen, uh, Eddie- Eddie’s moving. He’s going back to Texas. Chris won’t come back so he’s- he’s going to be closer to his son. Doesn’t want to keep missing big moments, you know? So- so, uh, we’re having a going away party for him on Friday. You’re invited.”

    Or:
Eddie moves, Buck invites Tommy to the going away party, and Tommy shows up.

There’s something dutiful and ceremonious about returning to form. Eddie’s been talking a lot about religion lately. Spirituality. Buck’s church is bodies. He’s real polytheistic. He’s born again. He prays to all kinds, he worships by kissing at the soles of feet, the taut skin of groins. Buck makes eyes at the guy doing hammer curls a couple benches away. He’s bulky, hairy. Gorgeous light brown skin. He gets eyes back. Buck always does.

Nothing ever changes. Run on the wheel, ride the carousel, spin on the axis.

    Summary

If the only reason he isn’t rotting in the ruins of a department store in Encino is because of the sense of duty of a rookie he’s tormented from the moment they met, then Tommy shouldn’t be here right now.

Statistically, karmically, cosmically, like he’s always known in the back of his mind, Tommy was never supposed to make it out of that mall. An insignificant man dying in an insignificant place—his fate finally unfurled. Any other American man burned and buried in the belly of any other American strip mall, the two of them indiscernible archetypes of their kind.

Tommy’s life has been a horror movie, but loving Evan is like a romantic comedy.
