Summary
Patrick has been a perfectly fine scapegoat for as long as he didn’t have to look him in the eyes—for Tashi, and thus, for Art, because he’d done enough fucked up things to keep the lie believable, to frontload blame, channel every bit of jealousy and self-righteousness and frustration he’s ever felt towards him and bury his memory into something warped, but they’re too close now to avoid the inevitable blow up. The buried truth.
The truth is, they’re each other’s inverse in that Patrick will betray others to prove to himself that he’s a scumbag, and Art will betray himself to feel less guilty about what he wants.
The truth is, Art knows repression first and second hand, literally, and he’s done good forgetting.

Summary
A few paces away, Art looks sidelong, snuffs his cigarette on the hotel wall, and puts another in his smooth lips, thumbing his clear lighter at the end. The sparkwheel smolders and flicks, hissing, but a flame doesn’t thrust, so he shields it from the breeze with his left hand and retries. Futile. A silver band cages his ring finger.
That was fast. Not even three years.

Summary
Patrick went into this date feeling pretty confident about how things were going to go. He’d woo Tashi with his tennis skills, roguish charm, and witty repartee and she’d melt in his hands, and they’d do something hot that he could gloat to Art about. That’s how most of his dates go. As he sits at the foot of her single bed, he realizes that he’s very much on the back foot.
He kind of likes it.
Patrick Zweig has Tashi Duncan's number. They spend a sweltering afternoon together.
