The way he closed in, so perfectly predatory, was as smooth and inevitable as a hunter tightening its noose. His voice caressed the silence with quiet command, echoing in the fragile space between them. “Why not stop this?”
The unspoken hook dangled there: Why not let me win?
“You know I can’t do that,” Dream replied, his voice low and worn at the edges. He felt his SOULbeat thunder in his chest—a distant, fluttering reminder of duty—but made no move to stand. Normally, he would leap upright at the first glimpse of Nightmare, form tensing for a fight. But tonight, he simply couldn’t summon that energy. He stayed there in the grass, shoulders slack, resignation clinging to him like smoke.
