For a second Ellie is conflicted. She knows Hardy is in pain but has no idea how to comfort him. They don't have that kind of relationship, they don't show each other their emotions. Or at least, Hardy doesn't. Ellie thinks back to an offer of a hug in the ladies' toilet.
She clears her throat and reaches a hand to gently shake Hardy's shoulder.
"Sir, Har-" She sighs. "Alec?" God but that feels weird on her tongue.

Eyes open and misty, Dean stares across the diner table, where just seconds before, a man with bright blue eyes sat, their fingers tangled atop the checkerboard vinyl. His phone is nowhere in sight, nowhere within reach—yet it rings, growing increasingly louder as the noise of the diner fades away, as black tinges the corners of his fantasy. “No,” he groans, bowing his head.
Another second, and the dream bleeds away, fading into nothingness. Another ring, and the phone silences, no longer rattling the nightstand. Quiet—blissful quiet, yet Dean refuses to open his eyes, still clinging to the hand he held, the hand that’s no longer there.

It starts with a rosary.
Dean owns plenty of the things, from flat hematite beads to rounded plastic bits, all blessed by the nearest priest and stuffed in into a pouch at the bottom of his duffel. Purely for exorcisms, never any that he intends to wear. Normally he buys them from thrift stores or strings them together if he’s in a hurry; those never last a day, and the blessings he whips together never quite hold.
Today, he happens upon a small box at a yard sale, surrounded by other even more ornate necklaces and bracelets, and a few rings too gaudy for practical wear.
