Summary
Clive and Joshua’s relationship— as it blossoms from brothers into something more.
“You needn’t follow me, when I’ll come to you. Always.” Clive could find the time—he would carve it out if he must. "Even if not right away, your big brother will always come back to you, ever at your side." He hesitates for just a beat, before placing a dry, chaste kiss to the heated skin of Joshua's forehead.
Settled into his bed and secure in Clive's embrace, his brother's light touches do much to soothe the deep ache of loneliness and discontent gnawing at Joshua's stomach. They’re comforting—coaxing him to speak his mind, a luxury not meant for a boy whose future is predestined. There’s a warmth inside his brother, a flame which matches his own, smoldering and tempered now, lulling him into the quiet solace of his own personal eden. He feels it igniting in his chest as supple lips press against his forehead, his brother’s low voice reverberating against his skin.

Summary
The sun beats down upon him, a blue sky blankets the firmament, and Clive leans against fencing, trying not to make his eavesdropping so obvious.
"Do you think he bites?" A woman says in a hushed whisper, the subdued, airy tone of idle gossip. Clive can tell Joshua too has heard, his eyes flickering up from his book.
"Who, the hound?” The other woman leans in even closer, her cheeky tone electing a giggle from her companion. “Or the master?"
“Oh,” Joshua says, leaning in close to Clive, mischief on his tongue. “The master, most definitely.”

Summary
At the end of all things, Joshua finds Clive on the shore.
Now, there is no Duchy, no Undying. The Phoenix, all eikons and magic, snuffed out of the world. No longer are there gods and monsters—just his brother, his gift in his arms.
Joshua would stay with him, always. Together, never to be parted again—for that was always his chosen path.

Summary
“Would you have mine?” Clive blurts out the sudden thought.
“Have—you want me to take your earring?” Joshua looks up again from pages of thick vellum, surprise on his face.
“Yes.”
His face pinches, and his voice is soft. “But, it’s yours. It’s been with you all these years.”
“It would make me happy, to see you wearing it.” He smiles at that, and Clive knows he’ll say yes.

Summary
They are heavy. They are heavy and warm and so filling. That comes from the women in whispers. They’re so filling, the women whisper to her.
Early on, when she was even younger, she mentioned it to Thancred. She was worried. She couldn’t fully grasp what rumors like that meant, but she wondered if it wasn’t some terrible type of sin eater…
Thancred had shaken his head. “Naught but superstitions passed between frightened people,” he said, “out in the middle of nowhere.”
That made sense. Out in the middle of nowhere, there is more to be frightened of.

Summary
After touching Joshua for the first time, Clive sees his opportunity to push things even further.
“You want to dance with me?” Clive gives his brother a lopsided smile. “I’m afraid I’m terribly out of practice.” Not that he needs any encouragement. After all, he’s never been able to deny Joshua anything he desires.
To think that the Phoenix would choose him to stay by his side, albeit in a different way than anyone imagined. He may not have inherited the eikon, but he has inherited something greater.

Summary
Joshua confronts the demon from his nightmares in a very healthy way.
“I don’t want to hurt you,” Clive manages, voice strained and tight.
“But you need to…” Joshua dazedly trails his fingertips down his brother’s impressive chest and over his abdomen, marveling at the god of a man before him. “Let him take you— let him take me. Ifrit.”
