Natsuno should be ash and dust. He should have burned with the rest of that village that was a grave. He should be pulverized flesh melting into dirt with a hundred other bodies.
Instead, he’s whole and awake. Natsuno sits up from his bed in his family’s house in Sotoba, which he hasn’t lain in since his death. His windows are closed and only thin streaks of morning light make it through the shutters. He feels his fangs in his mouth, in their unexpressed position, hidden behind the regular set of teeth.

“That place is way haunted, Lis." Taffy says this as if she's imparting some arcane wisdom upon her, not the town's only urban legend. She even develops the same spooky cadence that everyone uses to tell it: “On a dark, stormy night... under the full moon... lightning will strike Bachelor's Grove! And all of those sad-sack singles will rise from the dead to take a living bride and drag her, kicking and screaming, back down into the earth. For eternity.”
Kicking and screaming — yeah, right. Being whisked off to spend eternity with a man who desires her enough to claw his way out of the grave isn't what Lisa would call a horror story. Quite the contrary.
