“Fuck,” he swears while David barks from the doorway, his feet tip-tapping against the hardwood anxiously. “It’s okay,” Henry tells him, “really, I have it under control and there’s nothing to be concerned—.”
The sharp trill of the smoke detector cuts him off, and David goes flying into the living room, tail tucked between his legs.
Henry sighs and grabs his phone off the counter and quickly dials 9-1-1.
“9-1-1,” the operator says as Henry starts after David, “What’s the nature of your emergency?”
“I can’t be certain,” Henry begins, “but it’s entirely possible that there’s about to be a fire in my kitchen.”
Or, 5 times Alex comes to Henry's rescue, 1 time Henry returns the favor.

“I’m so sorry, I don’t recall that one” Henry lies, flashing an apologetic smile. “I don’t remember the details of most of those uni parties these days.”
(Twenty years ago, Henry met—and let go of—his soulmate. Now he's in his 40s, with a new job in a new city, and certainly not expecting said soulmate to come barreling into his life again. A small white lie seems like the simplest way to keep things from getting awkward, but real life has a way of getting complicated.)

Henry's eyes widen, almost cartoonish. “Christ, no. Not. It's not… that. She is my niece, but my sister is currently, well, unable to take care of her. And Sophia was not doing well living with my brother, so they suggested that she try staying with me.”
“Oh, yeah.” Alex nods. “Thanks for clarifying that you didn't have a kid with your sister.”
“I am very gay.”
Alex fights to subdue his smile. “Is that the only reason?”
Henry's blush is spreading down his neck. “Well, no, certainly not. It just seemed… er, pertinent?”
Fuck, he's cute.
Alex kind of wants to eat him.
