He got a dark chuckle in response. “Oh, ho, ho, I do, and you can! Know why?” Homelander turned away from the mirror and faced Ben, eyes cloudy and gaze faraway, as if still staring into the mirror. Like he was sleepwalking.
“See, the only ones who had an ounce of say-so are out of the picture, and his pathetic attachment to the cocksucking public is hanging by a thread. Now, where you come in, Soldier Boy...” A leathery finger pointed at him. “You have the one thing none of those fuckers do, but they all want.”
The way those eyes glinted reminded Ben of the taxidermied horned owl that hung over the fireplace in his father's study. Dull sapphire glass in clean, dead holes.
Unimpressed, he raised a brow. “Which is?”
Thin lips pulled back, exposing sharp canines. Some might call the motion a smile, but Ben's been around the block long enough to recognize a camera-ready mask.
“Control.”

Ryan blinks, holding Homelander’s determined gaze, mind reeling as the hand holding the side of his head pulls him forward.
“Son, we can do anything we want. And no one can stop us. Now that… that’s a good feeling.” Homelander says, stroking his cheek. Glimmering icy pools bore into pure baby-blues. “A really good feeling.”
Homelander and Ryan’s bedtime talk turns into something that should never happen between father and son.
