He was met with loaded silence. The anxiety spark became an anxiety plunge and twist.
“Happy. Is it Peter?”
“It’s… well. Who else would it be, right?”
“Hogan.”
He hated this. The spark, the plunge, the twist. The tension creeping from his shoulder blades, clawing down arms both flesh and metal, somehow, someway, and bunching up inside his palms. The hysteria of it all.
“It’s—alright, I won’t sugarcoat it. The kid’s alive, but he got shot, Tony. Twice.”

“What?” Peter asks.
Tony is raising an eyebrow at his very advanced Stark Phone.
“... ‘Irondad’.”
Peter nearly chokes on his drink, almost making a mess in the extremely expensive kitchen, so he swallows as much cappuccino as he can to hide the fact he’s literally shaking and feeling like he’s going to die.
“Whoa! That sure is weird! Hahahaha!” He laughs hysterically. “Hahaha… haha… ha.”
Tony, however, doesn’t even bat an eye at him as he’s concentrated on his phone, merely shrugging and not suspecting anything.
“Eh. I’ve seen worse.”

Peter Parker’s biggest fear is that everyone he loves dies, so when one of Tony’s jokes hits a little too close to home, Peter tries to distance himself from his father-figure/mentor/hero. Unfortunately, a mission going wrong and landing him in the Tower’s med-bay means he has nowhere to hide when Tony asks him what’s wrong.

“Jesus, kid, you’re gonna send me to an early grave,” the billionaire joked, still massaging his temples with his eyes closed. Because of this, Tony never saw how quickly Peter’s face paled as he stumbled back a few steps in dreaded realisation. The older man never saw the absolute terror in the boy’s eyes- eyes that were suddenly glistening with tears- caused by his thoughtless words.
