“I was thinking I might go warm myself up on the orlop deck,” Tozer says. “See if Mr. Thompson might need a fellow to fetch some coal.”
It’s an absurd statement. The orlop deck is frigid, just barely warmer than the open air between gusts of wind, what with the cold from the ice seeping through the hull. It’s much warmer on the upper deck where the men sleep in their hammocks and the galley stove burns.
Some instinct tells Edward what Tozer means. What he’s suggesting, shocking as it is.
