"Dirk hated the ocean.
It was a vast nothingness, a constant reminder of his isolation. Full of ruins and featureless cities, unchanging as far as he could see. Dirk couldn"t help but wonder if Jake was just the same. Steady, unchanging, empty, inescapable.
He wondered what his life would look like without Jake in it. He imagined it would look something like a life without the ocean."
Dirk and Jake have a loving relationship. They compliment each other well, and Jake is always talking about how happy he is with Dirk.
When Dirk is alone, Jake isn"t the person he wants to talk to. He wants Hal, but Hal isn"t around anymore.
With Hal gone, Dirk has to find creative ways to talk to him.

"Dirk thought of yesterday. He thought about Hal, how they had spent the day together modifying and upgrading his body. They’d finally cracked the code with Hal’s touch sensors. For the first time in years, Hal had regained his sense of touch. He could feel."
Dirk gives Hal a major upgrade to his body, the final touch to complete the years-long project and give Hal what he"d asked for - he wanted to feel "real." Real the same way Dirk was real.
When Dirk doesn"t deliver on his promise, Hal decides to change the plan. If he can"t be "real" like Dirk, then Dirk will be "real" like him.
