Excerpt: After fumbling with the lock and wiggling the pins for much longer than she would have liked, Inej shoves the window open, finally earning her reprieve from the rain. The attic is cold but blissfully dry.
But the sight she’s greeted with takes her breath away faster than the frigid weather. Kaz is seated at his desk with his shirtsleeves pushed up and hands bare. He shuffles a deck of cards and the way they move between his long, slender fingers is reminiscent of wind in tall grass.

Inej settles on the windowsill, basking in the sunlight, and pulls the flowers from her pocket to admire how they almost glow. She raises one to her nose. It doesn’t have a smell besides that of something fresh and green. Something new and wild.

Summary
Kaz shrugs the proffered coat on one arm at a time, transferring his cane from hand to hand, and Wylan releases the thick fabric to settle snugly on his shoulders. Wylan is always quick to withdraw his hands, careful not to let them linger or brush against Kaz. But he hopes Kaz can feel the gesture for what it’s supposed to be anyway—a hug at the door; a friendly pat on the arm; the clasping of hands in parting. A thank you for bringing his home to life once more.

Kaz doesn’t treat her differently, per se, but she notices the arm’s length he keeps her at now. How brusque he is with her around the others, and how short and to the point—gaze flickering across her face like she’s a painting he wants to steal—when they are alone.
She looks at him the same. Her sharp boy, sculpted from black marble. Cool to the touch at first, then so, so warm the longer her hands are on him. She can’t soon forget the feel of him. It was a mistake. She knows it was. She doesn’t quite care.

A pleasant flush spreads through him remembering the first time he woke up with a ring of bruises that Inej had kissed into his skin, circling his neck like a medal he had worked so hard to earn. He had rolled over in bed to face her and preened while she traced her fingers lightly over the marks. Mine, she had whispered. Yours, Kaz had confirmed.
Inej places her mouth on the base of his throat now and he feels her canines nip into his skin. He would let her devour him if she asked.
