Summary
mrrreeooww
Buck lets out a sound, akin to the meow of a house cat.
In the distance, the lioness lifts her head above the grass line. Buck smiles into his camera as the soft clicks of the camera shutter fills the air. The lioness drops her head back down, clearly not too interested in Buck pretending to be a cat.
Eddie thinks it’s a bit silly that Buck’s antics make his heart flutter like a little kid. He’s terribly endeared by it all as well. He wants to dive into Buck’s brain and discover what drives all his decisions. “Did you just meow at a lion?” He asks.

Tommy: Can I have them back?
tommy finally texts buck, it's just not what he expected him to say

Summary
Eddie slides open the peephole and looks through, and, like he just knew, on the other side of the door is Buck. He wastes no time closing the peephole and unlocking the door. Buck just looks at him blankly when Eddie opens the door. He doesn’t say anything, doesn’t even give Eddie’s whole get-up the little cock of his eyebrow, just pulls a bottle out of the six pack in his hand and hands it to Eddie as he pushes right past.
“Don’t ask me how I am,”buck goes to eddie; they talk

She finds Eddie leaning up against the counter, fixing her hair in the mirror. “You come here often?” Buck grins as she checks out her girlfriend, looking stunning as ever in the bar bathroom.
“Shut up and come here” Eddie giggles, grabbing Buck’s hand and pulling her into an empty stall, locking it behind them.

Summary
“I tried to dig you out with my hands,” His hands have a slight shake to them as Buck looks up and meets Eddie’s gaze. “Did I ever tell you that?”
It’s an honest question. Buck truly cannot remember if anyone told Eddie how he screamed in agony, clawing at the mud in a desperate attempt to get to Eddie. Buck’s chest gets tight anytime he thinks about the well. The terror and fear of that moment is intimately ingrained within him.
“No,” Eddie’s face tenses slightly. His brows furrow, and his lips part. “You didn’t.”
buck and eddie finally talk about the well

Summary
The first time he sets foot inside of a Church after he moves is when Shannon dies. He carries her coffin to the altar and doesn’t cry.
The second time is years later, when Buck gets struck down from the ladder by lightning, stops breathing for three minutes and seventeen seconds and Eddie performs CPR the whole way to the hospital. He tries to breathe life back into Buck’s body, and silently prays to a God he’s sure has forgotten and abandoned him. He cracks Buck’s ribs trying to get his heart pumping again, and when it does, Eddie cries.
The third time Eddie steps inside of a church it’s three pm on a Thursday and he has the day off. Buck is out with Tommy somewhere and can’t hang out, and Eddie can’t help the feeling of jealousy that runs through him like a wave. Even though Buck has been always at least three feet from Eddie for the past three days.
The third time he walks into the 'house of God', it’s four days after his parents came all the way from El Paso to take Christopher.
(or, chris leaves and eddie deals with all the things religion, grief and buck)

Summary
The phone on Buck’s nightstand starts to vibrate, and Eddie freezes in a delayed reaction.
“Fuck,” Buck says, dropping his head back and turning over to grab his phone, forcing Eddie to peel himself away.
Eddie's eyebrows scrunch. He recognizes the haptics: it’s Morse code. The vibrations are reading out: “PA.”
After running a quick list of abbreviations in his head, the only explanation that makes sense is Pennsylvania.
Oh. Yeah, fuck.

Summary
Missing Chris is less of an emotion these days and more of a physical entity. He’s sure everyone can see that he’s slowly hollowing himself out, that he can’t do much of anything else.
But when Jee laughs at him trying to get his tongue to touch his nose, and Mara loops one of her arms through his to keep him from tossing the rest of his cup in the garbage, Eddie feels solid again.
Maybe he likes yellow birthday cake ice cream after all.
(or, gerrard messes with the team's schedules and eddie 'i just drove my son to flee the state' diaz is the only option to watch mara and jee-yun after school on tuesdays, which, shouldn't be a problem at all, right?)

Summary
Buck is fucking frozen. His mouth is dry, and his brain is blank except for oh no, oh fuck reverberating in his frontal lobe. He can’t answer. He feels the pressure against the metaphorical closet door, the hinges creaking against the weight of the boxes crashing down.
“Are those… hearing aids?” He registers Eddie's voice through the ringing in his ears.
It takes him a moment before he can finally whisper it out. He feels his head nod against his will.
“Yeah.”
The door gives out.
or: how a conversation about tardigrades results in buck grappling with a disability he's suppressed, getting hearing aids, and realizing that the family he craves has been there for him all along. in that order.
