There was work to do–rounds to count, med supplies to take stock of, coordinates to figure out, but this was rare, this moment. Soap so still, so peaceful. Not clawing his vicious way through every interaction like he had to best life itself. Like every breath was a bloody battle he had to win.
Ghost’s boots made the questionable floorboards creak as he took one, two steps forward, until he was standing over Soap, the sunset casting his long shadow across his sergeant’s sleeping body, engulfing him within its dark outline.
