Summary
When Vi was younger – between the first night her life had collapsed around her and the second – she’d watched a couple drown in the river. One had fallen from a low bridge, too far from either bank, and the other had gone after him, driven by a mixture of desperation and love that overpowered any sense of self preservation.
The love had lasted until they got within arm’s reach of each other, until their bodies had realised they were trapped together in a swirling current, until their survival instincts reasserted themselves. Only the desperation had remained then, and they’d clung then clawed at each other, scrabbling at clothing and flesh in an effort to stay afloat. It had proved futile in the end – they were each trapped by the instinctive grip of the other, and they’d simply splashed and struggled until their strength had waned and they’d disappeared together into the murk of the Pilt.
Vi wonders why she’s reminded so vividly of that moment as Caitlyn comes apart against her, with fingers tangled in her hair and the taste of river water on her tongue.

Summary
Because it turns out the Halo can want things now, sort of. Not the way a human would, with thoughts or motivation or articulable desires. The Halo wants things the way a tree wants water and shoves a taproot through flagstone to get it, which is all well and good for the tree, but less so for the idiot trying to keep her patio intact. Unfortunately for Ava, she’s both the idiot and the taproot. The flagstone is her dignity. The water – for reasons becoming rapidly and unavoidably apparent – is Beatrice.
