So Meng Yao suffers. He endures. He does his very best for Nie Mingjue. Most of the time, his anger is a slow rolling simmer. He keeps it to a slow boil, careful, controlled, hidden behind a polite dimpled smile and a low bow.
And somehow, by virtue of his observant nature or perhaps something residing behind a mask of his own, Huaisang seems to sense it. Just as the rolling simmer of anger beneath Meng Yao’s skin threatens to boil over, as the slurs and taunts grow too heavy for his shoulders to bear, Huaisang flutters that fan: black and gold, a sly smile, a pouting lip.
And the game begins.

His tears, when deliberate, are beautiful; perfect fat shining beads of water, slipping artistically down over his cheeks one at a time, the way an empress in a poem might weep as she orders war declared. Not so now; his face is red, eyes swollen, tears ceaseless. He tries to stifle his sobs, gasping for air until they are safely in his bed; then he presses his face into his hands and makes a sound like a wounded animal, like a baby bird falling from the nest. His nose is running.
Jin Guangyao is charmed.
Huaisang is distressed; his san-ge comforts him.

And yet, his traitorous mouth quirked up into a half-smile as he said, “Sure, Huaisang.”

Or, the one where Xue Yang absolutely had no intention of his life going the direction he has, but maybe also it's nice to live in a mansion and have anything he wanted. It made it easier to ignore his multitude of other poor life choices.
