Shouta glares at him some more and Hizashi feels like shit instantly, but this needs to be cleared up and Hitoshi is already on edge now. At this point, stopping the inquiry would do more harm than good, so Hizashi bravely soldiers on.
“What are your plans for New Year’s Eve?”
It’s an innocent enough question, in Hizashi’s mind, so he doesn’t quite understand why Hitoshi goes all pale all of a sudden, but then again—minefield. They never really know what’s going to set Hitoshi off; sure, they sorted out a few things, know to avoid certain words or movements, but all in all, it’s still always a surprise.
“What—do you mean?” Hitoshi haltingly asks, avoiding eye contact with them and Shouta and Hizashi share another look.

Shouta understands Hizashi’s frustration because he too would love to do nothing more than snatch the kid up and aggressively care for him until those eyebags are gone and he stops flinching at sharp movements and he puts on the weight he should have at his age and with his training.

“He’s not ready. You see how nervous he gets when we ask about anything. He has to want our help. If we force the issue, we’ll lose him. You see how spooked he is on a daily basis.”

“Dude,” Kirishima says from Katsuki’s side and Katsuki tries to bury his face in the cup he’s holding. It’s clearly not enough to deter Kirishima because he bumps their shoulders together and repeats “Dude!”
“Don’t,” Katsuki shortly snaps out but of course Kirishima has never been intimidated by his bluntness or his rage.
Usually Katsuki is thankful for it, but not today. Not right now.
“Him?” Kirishima asks, and Katsuki catches him watching Hitoshi as well.
“Fuck off,” he grumbles, turning around because he hopes if he stops looking maybe Kirishima will forget all about it and never bring it up again.

Hizashi’s hands are shaking because this can’t be real.
“What is this?” he breathes out, scared to reach out and ruin the absolute masterpiece in front of him but he turns pleading eyes on Shouta. “Explain.”
“Happy anniversary,” is all Shouta says, shrugging his shoulders as if the duck figurine in front of Hizashi is a little trinket he picked up at the store on the corner.
“Shouta Aizawa, you will tell me right now what the fuck is going on here,” Hizashi says, more firmly now, because this can’t be.
This statue is expensive in a way not even they could pay just like that and especially not without Hizashi noticing. Shouta did not take that much money from their bank account, there is just no way.

Summary
Shouta watches how Shinsou wrings his hands in front of his chest, how his eyes dart all over the place and he starts extracting himself from the warm cocoon of his sleeping bag. This will not be over quick, even though he never expected Shinsou to be one of his problem kids.
He had hoped that starting out in Gen Ed saved the boy from that particular curse but clearly he was wrong.
“I need your help,” Shinsou finally mutters and Hizashi looks back at Shouta, who waves him in.
“Come here, kid. What is it?” Shouta says, his voice rougher than usual because he was just falling asleep but he’d never send one of his kids away and especially not Shinsou and most certainly not after he so plainly asked for help.

Summary
When Katsuki comes home and is met only with silence even though the door was unlocked, he knows Hitoshi’s mission didn’t go over well.
“Fuck,” Katsuki mutters as he toes off his shoes and then takes the time to throw on a ratty shirt and soft sweatpants before he goes to find Hitoshi in the bathroom.
Just like Katsuki knew he would be, he’s curled up in the bath, pressed into the far end, his arms around his legs and his face buried in his knees. It’s still unbearably hot in the bathroom, so he can’t have been there for long yet, which means that Katsuki wasn’t that far behind him.

Hitoshi thinks it’s the happiest moment of his life when the cat bonks its entire head into his hand afterwards and the bliss lasts for a good five seconds before Yamada speaks.
“Ah, I see you’ve met Bumbles.”
It’s enough to make Hitoshi go ice-cold with terror and he scrambles away from the cat, trying to put as much space between him and the defenceless creature as he can.
“Please, it’s—it’s my fault, it didn’t mean to pay me any attention, I made it, I brainwashed it, please don’t hurt it,” he rushes out, stumbling over his words in his haste and he feels as if he’s choking on fear. “Please, the cat didn’t do anything wrong, it was me, all me, please, don’t!”
“Shinsou,” Yamada whispers out, and Hitoshi doesn’t dare to look up at him, doesn’t dare to do anything but to cower on the ground and hope they’ll go after him instead of the cat.

Summary
Shouta thinks he might feel vaguely sick and the look on Hizashi’s face tells him that he’s not doing any better.
He doesn’t know what he expected from an orphanage, but it certainly wasn’t this. It’s run-down, downright filthy if you care to look past the somewhat cleaned entrance hall and to think that kids have to spent their time here, waiting, hoping for someone to adopt them is just all kinds of wrong.
“We can only take one,” Hizashi mutters under his breath, a steady reminder that they cannot go ahead and adopt every single kid that is currently placed here.

He’s all Hitoshi can see. Katsuki, throwing his head back and chugging down the beer Kirishima put into his hand. Katsuki, eyes sliding over to Hitoshi. Katsuki, giving him a devastating smile. Katsuki, holding out his hand and pulling Hitoshi in for a toe-curling kiss.
Katsuki, Katsuki, Katsuki.
Sometimes Hitoshi thinks his life would be horribly off balance without Katsuki in it, and it’s a thought that scares him.

"No, don't," Hitoshi tries again, pressing himself further into the corner as if that could help him.
But the thought of being under his foster father's quirk for days has Hitoshi desperate in ways he has never been before and he just knows that death would be kinder than this. Hitoshi had to endure it for hours in the past and even that was enough to drive him slightly mad.
If he stays under the influence for three days he won't make it out sane, he just knows it.

Because they are together. Boyfriends, even. Mutual confessions on both sides, and Hitoshi simply cannot understand how he got here.
Sure, he damn well knows why he is here, because, hello, that's fucking Pro Hero Dynamight, one of the most promising young heroes out there and who is Hitoshi to say no to someone like that? Especially since Bakugo Katsuki is also nothing to scoff at, with his sharp wit and mean remarks and gruff way to care for people more than he likes to let on.
So Hitoshi damn well understands his own side of things, but Katsuki's? Not so much.

Summary
“What are you doing?” he wants to know but Hizashi thinks he doesn’t have to explain himself as he gathers Shouta’s hair in his hand, smoothing it away from his face and tying it all up in a ponytail.
“Doing us both a favour,” Hizashi says with a cheeky smile but he was not prepared for the way Shouta’s face falls and his hands hang empty and uselessly in the air when Shouta moves out of his reach.
“Don’t,” Shouta mutters, reaching up to undo the ponytail and almost desperately tugs on his bangs to make them fall into his face again.
“Shou, what—” Hizashi wants to ask but Shouta leans back over the paper he needs to grade, his face closed off and Hizashi has known him long enough to understand that he doesn’t want to talk about it.
Hizashi has no idea at all what the hell is going on right now, but he’s not in the mood to fight, which this would undoubtedly turn into should he press and so he gently and carefully puts a hand to Shouta’s back.
“Alright,” he softly says, willing to give Shouta this for now, but he files it away, ready to inspect this at a later date.
For now, he’s just relieved when Shouta leans into his hand, even though he doesn’t look at him again.

“I have no fucking clue,” Hitoshi admits and still leans in because Bakugo’s lips are right there and what else is he supposed to do when Bakugo keeps staring at him like that.
Their lips are only a hair’s breath away when Bakugo puts a hand to his chest, effectively stopping Hitoshi and then still taking a step back for good measure, too.
“I’m not about to do that with you, Shinsou,” Bakugo tells him and it feels as if he upended a bucket of ice-water over Hitoshi.

Again, I might add because you can’t be bothered to keep me informed.” Hizashi pauses to take a deep breath but he goes on before Shouta can find his own words. “You kind of drifted away from me ever since Oboro died but it’s getting worse lately, you keep pushing me away and how am I going to take care of you if I don’t even know your injuries?”
"Well, the beauty of this arrangement is that you don't have to take care of me," Shouta scathingly says because he very deliberately did not make Hizashi his emergency contact for precisely this reason, and watches how Hizashi stills completely.
"Arrangement?" he whispers out and Shouta refuses to be hurt by the way his voice cracks. "You're calling this friendship an 'arrangement'?"

It seems that finally alerts Shinsou to the fact that someone is in the apartment with him because his head lolls around until he can blink up at Katsuki.
"Oh, shit," Katsuki mutters because Shinsou's eyes are glassy and his face is flushed. "You're sick."
"No shit," Shinsou slurs out and Katsuki puts his hand to his forehead.
"And you're burning up. Wonderful," he sighs out because Shinsou is so hot to the touch that new worry laces through Katsuki.

"I'll just make sure that nothing goes wrong," Bakugo finally says and Hitoshi wishes it could be as easy as that.
