Summary
Roger remembers how not that long ago his attraction to Novak would feel spontaneous and fleeting. A physical pull born out of tension and adrenaline running high, both of them usually being a little strung up before anything sexual was even on the cards. Maybe it happened one too many times, and the primal part of his brain just stopped registering the difference in scenarios? That would be the more simple of the possibilities.

"I think it had been gradually becoming more clear in the past few months, my body just…," Roger’s voice cuts off. Three heartbeats later Novak hears him again, "was not up to the task anymore. So I was prepared, you know? It wasn"t like a sudden hit."
Maybe it wasn"t, but Novak doesn’t hear a smile in Roger’s voice anymore. He understands. No matter what, you can"t be completely prepared for something like that. What is it he can say to comfort the other man now? And what if he can"t? Not over a goddamn phone.

Summary
Even with a few genuinely nice moments in their strained relationship, he knows the rivalry with Roger was not meant to be warm and cordial. The way Novak sees it, the tension in real life is part of what makes them great rivals.
That being said, he really doesn"t feel like dealing with Federer being after his blood every time they play. Sometimes tension needs to be released, or it can blow up in your face.
