Summary

Something warm and soft covers Mi-ae’s body and it shocks her awake. She looks down at the blanket draped across her and up at Cheol. He sits next to her with an unimpressed look like he caught her.He crosses his arms. “Why are you acting like that?”
“Like what?”
“Like you’re sick.”
“I’m not!”
Cheol huffs. “You’ve been acting lethargic all week. You smell off too.”
She wants to call him weird for being able to smell something like that, but his gaze needles on her cheeks and shoulders. Her heart flips at the thought of him paying attention—and she feels more embarrassed. She looks back at the TV, summoning courage. “…I’m hungry.”

“Just ignore them, alright?” She says, and then projects her voice, “They’re just idiots!”The group—four of them—whoops and hollers, laughing at her words. This grates on her the most; the flippancy. Their inability to register criticism, moths flying into flames because they adore the light it emits, burning alive and never knowing until they’re dead. She hates it.
“Great ignoring,” Cheol mutters, and Mi-ae’s about to scream Who’s side are you on? before time splits:

His father instructed him to gather wood for the stove. Cheol follows orders, but the land possesses a persuasive quality, always luring him off to better places. He’d never been happier to return after high school, getting to work the land and be home.The river feeds into the mouth of the forest, where a small clearing sits while the river continues its path through the trees. At the edge of a river sits a woman. Cheol’s mouth gapes.

Summary
When Mi-ae's friends want to learn one of the Fire Boy's dance for a talent show, Mi-ae employs Cheol's help

Her finger hovers over the play button. The idea of Cheol watching flutters her heart—he may laugh at her, look disgusted, or show some other kind of annoying reaction that sparks a fight and leaves Mi-ae having to practice the dance by herself. She can manage, but learning herself is more difficult, and Cheol was the only person who could teach her the Folk Dance. Her friends want to learn and submit the dance to a talent show, so she needs to not only dance but do it well.She turns to Cheol. He lays dead on the couch; sweat pasting his shirt to his front, head lolled back, chest thundering waves. Learning a dance of this level rendered them equals. His presence provides a psychosomatic ease if nothing else. Mi-ae’s giddy that he hasn’t left yet, for whatever reason that may be.
