Summary
There's a shimmer of brilliant light before the Arc shuts off.
And then it’s just Ava and Lilith, alone in the room where they both tried to kill each other and neither of them died.
“She was still alive, right?” Ava asks. “She didn’t — she wasn’t — I didn’t wait too long, did I?”
When Lilith next speaks, she’s closer — beside Ava, as she hasn’t been in months. Maybe they’re not enemies anymore, even if they’ll never forgive each other. “She was still alive,” Lilith swears. She grips Ava’s shoulder, and this time, she doesn’t leave claw marks.

Beatrice is the one who goes through the Arc. She doesn't come back the same, but that's alright.

Summary
Miss Silva sighs, dramatic and put-upon. “Alright. I suppose I wouldn’t want you to lose your stripes for the grievous crime of using my name. But if you can’t call me Ava, can you do something else for me?”
Beatrice nods, even though it’s dangerous, even though Miss Silva could ask her for anything.
Perhaps she nods because Miss Silva could ask her for anything.
“Can you think of me as Ava, just in your head?” Miss Silva requests. “Even if you never say it.”
Beatrice considers this. A truly honourable person wouldn’t agree; decorum should govern the thought as well as the action. But Beatrice is already expected to tell Miss Silva no so often that it gets harder every time, and surely this is a small enough concession that no real harm can come of it.

Or, Ava throws everything she has at chipping away Beatrice's propriety, and it only takes several years, a pirate ship, and being absolutely shameless for her to succeed.

Summary
Diego elbows Ava lightly in the side to get her attention. "Ava? How come you don't have a boyfriend?" he asks.
What if it’s because of him? What if she’s so busy always trying to make sure that he’s taken care of that she’s missing out on all the things other nineteen-year-olds get to do?
"Huh?" There's a pause, and he can almost see Ava's brain stutter into stillness before lurching back to life. "Well, um, Diego, it's like — I'm really — if I thought that — see, it’s more like —"
He hears Lilith scoff and turns towards her. "It's not that hard. Kid, Ava's down bad for —"
"Shut up, Lilith," Ava grinds out, cutting her off.

Summary
Ava rolls over to face Beatrice properly, tucking her hands under the pillow. “Will you read me some?”
Beatrice considers this, one finger absently skimming down the spine of the book, mesmerizingly enough that Ava almost forgets she’s waiting for an answer. “If you like,” Beatrice replies. She says that, often, in place of yes, as though Ava can be trusted to want things safely, and Beatrice can give these things to her, as long as Ava’s wanting goes first, and doesn’t go too far ahead.
Beatrice’s reading voice is quiet and measured. Ava can almost understand, piecing together the language out of other languages she knows. And then there’s the way Beatrice speaks, so specifically that there’s that feeling of recognition, even when the words she says are only sounds.
