“Yes, of course,” Eve reciprocates a grin, feeling nervous already, eyes drifting down to Suki’s lips.
One day, maybe Eve could lean over the counter, kiss her lover without worrying if anyone saw. Every so often she sees a snippet of what their life could be, a vague period in the future where they could hold hands in public with no care in the world. Freedom. She often daydreamed about what their apartment would look like, what colour walls their bedroom would be. The permanence of it all: waking up to her lover everyday.
But right now, all Eve can think about is tomorrow.
“I’ll text you, okay?” Suki says, watching Eve walk out the door, leaving a human shaped void in her presence. Suki felt the room shift without Eve in it – everything now seeming slightly dull like the ashes of a burnt-out fire. Suki thought back to their last trip in Leeds - the feeling of Eve’s warm body wrapped around hers; skin to skin. The way Eve stroked Suki’s hair and kissed her forehead when she thought she was asleep. Suki crossed her arms, her hands feeling the ghost of Eve’s fingers like sunlight on her skin.

‘Eve couldn’t help but stare at her ex-lover at the dining table: hair half up, wearing a plain black jumper. Her head was bent down, she didn’t even look up. She couldn’t. A dull ache spreads from Eve’s chest and all she wants to do is hold her. And when the door slammed behind Nish, it left an atmosphere as quiet as death. Eve pulled up a chair, opposite to Suki on the table. Taking a breath in, Suki stands up, her chair legs scraping against the floor.
“How dare you, turning up at my house like this?!” almost shouting, walking over in Eve’s direction.’
