Summary
It was… confounding. To have the Winter Soldier who had wreaked so much havoc in his life say point blank, “I am sorry. I don’t expect you to forgive me. I barely forgive myself. You’re a good man, Tony Stark..." It left Tony feeling as if he’d stepped through Alice’s looking glass into a world where everything was just slightly tilted to the left. Not exactly wrong, per se, but still strange enough to leave him off-kilter.
Or... the former Winter Soldier writes Tony a letter to apologize. One small act of kindness in the hope of fostering peace changes more than anyone could possibly fathom.

“Good to see you, Howie,” Tommy murmurs, giving his friend an affectionate squeeze.
“Good to see you too. Seriously, thanks for doing this.”
Tommy shrugs. “What are friends for?”
Howie grins up at him. “Have you been introduced to Buck yet?”
Tommy shakes his head, chuckling when Howie immediately grips his wrist and starts frogmarching him towards Buck and his choreographer near the front of the stage.
“Buck, Eddie!” Howie calls out, grabbing their attention. “This is Tommy, the guy I was telling you about!”
The choreographer, who Tommy guesses must be Eddie, spots Tommy over Buck’s shoulder first, offering a smile and a jut of his chin in greeting. Buck finally turns and—
Oh.
Oh no.
Bright baby blues framed by enviably long lashes. Plush, pouty lips people would pay a mini fortune for. A light scattering of stubble in shades of gold and copper along a beautifully cut jawline. Wild curls begging for Tommy’s fingers to brush through them lay atop his head. He’s exactly as Tommy remembers, all except for the cherry blossom birthmark adorning his left brow.

“Something you’d like to ask, Buck?”
Buck fumbles with his toiletry bag, blinking owlishly. Bobby merely smiles, happy to wait him out.
“Uh… yeah. Um. Did you… Did you tell the others? About me?” Buck asks hesitantly.
Bobby shakes his head. Buck visibly melts with relief.
“Okay. Cool. It’s not that I don’t trust them just—”
“Buck, you don’t have to explain.”
“I don’t?”
Bobby shakes his head again, rising to his feet and slinging his bag over his shoulder. “Nope. This is your thing. Who you tell and how you tell them is up to you.”
Buck sighs, breaking into a shy smile. “Thanks, Cap. That… that means a lot.”
“No problem, kid,” Bobby assures and with a pat on Buck’s shoulder, he heads out.
Oh, if only he knew that this was the beginning of a very long, extremely hilarious years-long bet that would become infamous amongst the LAFD. But that night, Bobby simply went home to his small, sparse apartment, happy to know Buck felt that little bit extra secure at the 118.
Or... Buck is a shapeshifter but no one at the 118 knows what his form is. So of course it's only natural to make a bet to see who can guess what it is first.

He sat still and quiet in the abandoned warehouse, hiding from them.
James was telling him something speaking, pushing forward. He grunted trying to focus on the voice in his head.
“What?” He rasped aloud.
He was tired, sluggish, he just wanted to sleep.
No, come on now, not yet. We need to get the bleeding stopped.
He wanted to balk but the voice wouldn’t be stopped. It pushed and prodded talking him through it until he’d had his side bound up and the bleeding contained.
Well done.
He felt a warmth at the praise, the voice…James…he cared.
