    Auror's Headquarters, November 1st, 1981. In one interrogation room sits a bored Remus Lupin; in another, an irritated Sirius Black. Just earlier that day, the duo and four other rogues (identified by security as James Potter, Lily Evans, Peter Pettigrew and Regulus Black) have turned up at the doors of the Ministry of Magic with a dead body and five destroyed horcruxes. The Wizarding World is on a cliff's edge, and Auror Alastor Moody has two simple instructions: find out what happened to Voldemort, and get the suspects to say who killed Orion Black.

    “Regulus,” Sirius finally said, once he trusted he had his own voice under control, “has never once let me help him, even before I was a filthy blood-traitor. Why the fuck do you think I’d be able to save him now?”

    Tomorrow night. Kreacher’s words throbbed inside his head. Regulus will die tomorrow night.

    Sirius definitely wasn’t going to be getting any sleep at all this week.

    Sirius thought he had cut all ties with his family, but when Kreacher shows up in his bedroom with a dire warning, he's hardly able to let his idiot little brother die. And when he learns about the Horcrux his brother was chasing, he's hardly about to let him take on Voldemort alone.

    But getting tangled up in the House of Black again is not the best way to prove his innocence among an already-suspicious Order. Sirius has to walk a fine line if he wants to keep everyone he loves alive.

    (This series is in chronological order but does not need to be read in that order. NO other stories in this series are required reading, but all are suggested to flesh out the backstory.)

    He doesn’t know what comes over him then. Or maybe he does. Either way, his body moves before his brain realizes what he’s doing, and Remus leans across the way, stretching his arm out, and knocks the fruit clean out of Sirius’ hand. It hits the ground with a soft thud, wobbling against the edge of the blanket, then slowly succumbing to the pull of gravity and tumbling down the gentle slope of the hill right towards the edge of the lake.

    Sirius’ eyes follow it for all of a second before snapping back to Remus’ face, indignation written in the frown of his lips and the pinch of his brows.

    A pendulous second passes. Two. Three. They both blink at each other, eyes owlish, dumbfounded. Sirius breaks the silence.

    “Remus,” he starts, “what the bloody hell was-”

    Remus kisses him.
