    This is not an invitation Lan Zhan had ever yearned for, seeing as it had been so outside the realm of possible. He recognizes that it is an invitation, and he tells himself that it is his concern for Wei Ying that guides him, as though the love that he feels isn’t the most purely selfish emotion Lan Zhan has ever felt. Loving Wei Ying has always been a privilege.

    "I meant it," he says with an ease that he does not feel. "Next time you feel the need to be hurt… come to me."

    A new job brings Wei Ying to London, and back into Lan Zhan's life. Many things have changed since their time in boarding school (Lan Zhan is out of the closet, arranges charcuterie boards, stocks a fine bar…), but their friendship slots right back into place like no time has passed. Wei Ying is a little perplexed by the fact that Lan Zhan apparently doesn't have any interest in dating anyone despite being an obvious catch—but hey, at least that means he doesn't have to fight anyone for Lan Zhan's time and attention. And besides, it's not like Wei Ying is in any big rush to find himself a girlfriend either. It’s all working out great!

    Hanguang-jun can take Wei Ying to the edge like no one else can, like no one else has. Despite them starting off as virtual strangers — this is where Wei Ying would wink, get it — Wei Ying trusts him. Feels safe with him. Hanguang-jun is amazing. He’s the absolute best.

    Wei Ying’s maybe got a bit of a crush.

    Except Wei Ying’s heart belongs to another, and always has. Lan Zhan has been gone for years though; Hanguang-jun is here, and every night they put on a show for their viewers, and every night Wei Ying’s debt to the Jins becomes slightly smaller. Not by much — not enough that Wei Ying can ever see a way out of here, not in this lifetime, not with the life expectancy most dreamers of his profession have — but enough to feel as though he’s working towards something.

    And ever since Wei Ying met Hanguang-jun, he doesn’t mind it as much, being trapped in one place, being isolated.
