When he was a child, Todd Anderson dreamed of leaving small-town Connecticut behind and making it on his own in the big city. The small-town gossip and the hum of cicadas would fade into the privilege of anonymity, replaced by the sounds of sirens and traffic—signs of life. There would be no more late-night drives to sit in a parking lot, staring at streetlights. No more comparisons to his older brother—the youngest financial director in the history of Miller Davis Insurance, as his parents constantly reminded him. What Todd didn’t factor into his dreams, however, was what to do once he got to the city—New York City, in this case. Leaving his parents’ house had been an impulsive decision, spurred by yet another argument about career goals and how his brother actually made them proud.
