Gideon shook her head, trying to repel the words from sinking into her brain.
"No, no wait - you said. On Friday, at Dulcie's. You said you - that you had feelings for me." She felt like an idiot. A big, oaf of an idiot.
There was no response and Gideon had to pry her eyes open - she wasn't sure when she had squeezed them shut so hard - to make sure that Harrow was still there. And she was. And her smile was cruel.
"Oh Griddle," Harrow droned (Gideon despised how it sounded like Ianthe). "What could you possibly offer me? What could I ever need or want, from you?"
There was no shaking now. No use trying to shield herself from the words as they speared into her from every angle and lit her ablaze. The pain was staggering, pushing her away from Harrow and to the door. She didn't expect Harrow to follow. And she didn't.
