Summary
In those tentative, early days of partnership, still essentially strangers yet entirely reliant on each other to turn their own respective dreams into reality, he had been unsure what to make of Jayce’s touch if not pity. It was a hand pressed into Viktor’s back walking between the lab and their favourite coffee shop, it was a hand reaching out to help Viktor stand when he had been sitting for too long. But then it was more than that. It was Jayce’s hand traveling from in between Viktor’s shoulder blades to the small of his back, settling near his waist as they walked together. It was Jayce shaking his shoulder, leaning in to rest his forehead against it when they’d made a breakthrough and he couldn’t contain his excitement. It was the way Jayce grabbed his knee, always his good knee, and squeezed it affectionately. It was this, Jayce finding him asleep as he had done countless times before, and wrapping him up in a blanket rather than letting him suffer the consequences of his own actions.

That Jean would even want this — want him — after everything he’d done was possibly the biggest fantasy of all.

Neil is just trying to find a reason to not leave Palmetto after everyone else has moved on. But he never thought he would want to run toward something in favor of running away.
(In a slightly different world, two people find themselves meeting in a softer setting and in just as much need of each other. A story about dealing with pasts, sharing secrets and a cat who is an asshole yet manages to charm everyone around it.)
