He's made up his mind about this, whatever this is, has written Phoenix out even if it means walking himself proudly up to the gallows. What did he do, and what did von Karma do, and how does any of this make any sense at all? What hand is guiding either of them?
The tension in Edgeworth's jaw is palpable. "You don't know anything about that," he says, and his voice sounds fainter then he's ever heard it. "You don't know a single thing about— that."
Or, a conversation in the detention center before the last day of State v. Edgeworth.

Dear Kazuma,
I miss you dearly.
The fact that you will not be able to read this letter is precisely the reason why I write it. You see, Miss Susato believes that journaling is a method by which we can both achieve some form of healing from your sudden departure. Thus, I have agreed to her proposition, and have decided to write some letters to you, whenever I felt I had something to share. I suppose it makes sense, as I used to tell you almost anything while you were here, and thus I have no trouble sharing my thoughts with you.
It is now time for lunch, and afterwards Miss Susato will continue to undertake the ordeal of guiding me through the law, so I believe it is best if we part for now. I fear if I go on any longer, I will get too caught up in the technical details, like the fact these letters will never be sent, and you will never reply, and I am talking to no one at all. And I will be too sad to continue. So! We'll leave it here.
Rest assured, I will write more, so it is not as much a “farewell” as it is a “so long”.
