That day was the fucking catalyst for years of tormenting horror and evil that followed me back and culminated into my own personal hell!" Will's laughter dwindles, his voice taking on a more reflective tone. "It's just so weird how two people can grow up together, experience childhood the exact same way, but go on to live drastically different lives... But I'm glad Mike got away from me and my endless problems. All that bad stuff? He doesn't deserve that. Mike deserves to be happy and fall in love. Even if he forgets all about me. Jonathan's heart hammers and he jumps to cut him off, "Hey buddy, maybe you should try and get some sleep."

"El, wait," Mike calls out, desperation lacing his voice, stopping her in her tracks. "El, please, think about the painting—the one you commissioned from Will. It's a symbol of... of us, of what we have together," Mike blurts out.
El stops, her body language a mix of curiosity and confusion as she turns to face him. "Commission?" The word hangs in the air, foreign and misplaced in the context of their conversation.
"Exactly, you know, like asking someone to paint something... specifically," Mike tries to clarify, assuming a misunderstanding of terms is at play. "The D&D painting. I'm the heart?" He attempts to jog her memory with details, hoping for a spark of recognition.
"Mike, I really don't understand what you're talking about."

Will stares at them, dumbfounded, and he barely processes the sound of a zipper closing Mike’s backpack. He runs his finger back and forth across the top one before asking: “What’re these?”
“Letters,” Mike answers softly, “The letters that I never sent to–”
“You wrote me?” Will interrupts weakly. He stares at Mike with impossibly wide eyes as he stiffly nods his head. “How come you never…?”
“I was scared.” And before Will even has the chance to question what, exactly, is so scary about sending a letter to your long-distance best friend, Mike is hurriedly saying, “Just read them, okay? I promise they’ll explain what I can’t.”
