She dedicated the next song, in French so maybe not just catering to Americans, “to people alone on Christmas, or who want to be alone on Christmas, or who don’t even like Christmas!” The last bit got some laughter. The most melancholy version of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas she’d ever heard followed.

Except her mind refused.
The whole immortal but dead to the world while people hunt us thing apparently took longer than eight months, one week, and three days to process, who knew?

While she was active duty Nile had given plenty of thought to the kind of good time she wanted to have when she got home. She’d certainly earned a strings-free liaison with an older man who wasn’t going to look after her, baby her, assume he knew what she wanted better than she did, or bring any baggage to the arrangement.
