These are the first words Alex says to Henry after throwing open the door to their shared room. Henry blinks, sitting cross-legged against the headboard, rereading The Little Prince - it felt apt to bring - when Alex’s eyes settle on him.
“Oh fuck,” Alex follows up with, and, “Oh, you’re not Liam.”

Henry flushes, tonguing their lip. They try to ignore the man’s eyes dropping to their mouth. “Well, why should I trust you?”
“You probably shouldn’t. I am a stranger, and I know who you are,” The man says. He crosses his arms, and Henry gets an urge to touch his bicep. They ignore it. “I’ve got a date with Hyde Park and the Frameless experience nearby. Wanna come with?”
Henry should say no. Their entire being, the one composed of painstakingly built walls of logic and reason above their every want and desire, screams at them. Funnily enough, it's in Pip’s voice.
Well. It's about time Henry decides something on their own.
(Or: Henry leaves the palace for the day, and meets Alex on the tube.)

There are people in life that feel like rays of sun on one’s face, or the smell of cinnamon or the sound of bird call at dawn. These people are warm, and they are familiar, and they are creatures I do not think one experiences often in life. These people are so bright that to exist closely beside them threatens to blind oneself.
I’ve come to realize you are the first person like that for me.

When the guy bends to grab the ball, his little, white shorts lift, and all Alex can focus on is the way those thighs move and the sheer power behind them. He’s focusing so hard he doesn’t notice the incline of the sidewalk, nor the rock in front of him. And then, naturally, he’s bowling over and falling on his ass before he even realises what’s happening.
He may as well just die. Lay here and succumb to his wounds. Here lies Alex Claremont-Diaz, twenty-two and useless. Cause of death? Hot guy in slutty little shorts.
“Oh dear,” He hears, exceedingly British and posh and deep, and he lifts his head. Maybe death was a little premature of an idea after all. “Are you alright?”

Five days a week, Alex sits across from Henry for 58 minutes in the morning, rattling on about the virtues of the Tube and how efficient it is compared to the NYC subway, or his irrational dislike of Pret coffee, or a new bookstore he thinks Henry would like.
Five days a week, Alex and Henry leave the shelter together to take the bus home. They almost always end up standing for part of the way, occasionally bumping up against each other. Sometimes, Alex doesn't move away. It's nice.
Five days a week, Henry falls a little bit more in love.
Or, Alex and Henry fall in love—five days a week, four bus routes, three pseudo-dates, two holiday markets, and one red scarf of fate later.

Three weeks before Henry Fox's tour for his fourth, highly anticipated, awards-bait novel A Brief War in December begins, his publicist Janella breaks her foot on a bunny slope at Windham.
Alex can't be mad at her, even though he kind of is. Saying it out loud would be like kicking her when she was down, and she already went down a literal mountain in the worst way possible.
Now crammed in Rafael Luna's corner office, Janella is shooting Alex extremely apologetic looks while slumped on her crutches, wearing a bright orange cast. The conversation about who is going to be joining Henry Fox on his multi-city trek across the U.S. is also going downhill. Alex is feeling the same sort of free fall while standing still.
Because out of all the publicists available in their tiny underfunded department, the only one left to escort their company's best-selling author is regrettably him.
The problem is, well, Alex absolutely hates Henry Fox.
Or: Alex is the publicist for Mountchristen Publishers, and is stuck on a two-week tour with their best-selling, but frustrating, author Henry Fox.
