Actually seeing what was right in front of their eyes.
Because he knew it was written on his face. So why couldn’t anyone see it? Why wouldn’t anyone help him?

Summary
There was a thick moment of silence after she left. Hanging over their table and blocking out the noise from the rest of the restaurant. Miguel wasn’t sure if it was tinnitus or if he was just so weirded out by the whole thing that he couldn’t process any of it anymore.
But then Sensei stood abruptly, slamming a palm on the table and looking absolutely livid. “We’re outta here, Miguel. Let’s go.”
Miguel nodded, unable to find his voice, but wanting to leave just as much as Sensei did.
Or, three times Miguel faces discrimination because of his disability, and one time he deals with it like a pro.

First, she needed to figure out how much money they needed to raise at the car wash. Opening her laptop, Sam performed a quick google search on the surgery Miguel was getting. According to the internet, it was rare and risky, with mixed-to-poor outcomes.
The likelihood of Miguel ever walking again was slimmer than she thought it was.
Because Miguel downplayed it. Because she knew how much he hated people worrying about him. It was something so obvious about him. Something that was constantly written on his face.
At least these days.

“Look, Miguel,” Johnny finally said, “I don’t give a rat’s ass what your doctors say you can and can’t do, okay? And maybe right now isn’t the best time to challenge their bullshit diagnoses and their pansy-ass talk about what you should and shouldn’t expect out of your life going forward, but we need to talk about it more in the future. You’re going to get better. I know it.”
And even if he didn’t know it, even if he wasn’t one-hundred percent certain, Johnny was certain that all the negative talk was getting to Miguel. He was certain it wasn’t helping him. He was certain it never would.
Because that kind of shit sure as hell never helped him. Not when he was down at out. Not when he was knee-deep in the throes of alcoholism and addiction. And definitely not when he was throwing himself a pity party full of anger and spite.
Or, when Miguel finds himself home alone a few days after being released from the hospital, he begins to realize the terrifying magnitude of his injury.
Set between 3x4 and 3x5. Canon compliant.
