Eggman had been gone for years. He'd left more than a bit of his scrap behind, but save a handful, all of his creations had been either requisitioned or rendered very, very busted.
Of course, his absence didn't mean there weren't any threats to the world, or to a certain hedgehog. Sonic still saw danger rearing its head often enough. Even in peaceful times, the natural order of things dictated that one day, the Fastest Thing Alive would come to a permanent stop.
The fact didn't leave Knuckles or anyone else any more prepared for the news.
Nor any better equipped to carry the grief that came after.
