“Aventurine is none of your concern,” he says, plainly, “and frankly, it's not my job to track his whereabouts.” He turns to Stelle, and if March didn't know better, she'd almost say his gaze softened. “As for why I am taking his place, the IPC is a sponsor of the Intelligentsia Guild, and my knowledge makes me the best substitute.”
And that makes some sense, March supposes. It's not like they know what Aventurine was doing behind the scenes, so why would they need to know what was going on with him now? They don't even know him, really, so why does something feel so wrong?
Before March gets a chance to voice her thoughts, Himeko is stepping forward, a diplomatic smile on her face. “We look forward to working with you, Doctor,” she says, “It's been a while since the Express has partnered with the Guild.”
“Send our regards to Aventurine,” Welt says, chiming in. “He seemed very invested in Penacony, and it'd be a shame if he's been reassigned.”
Something bitter flashes through Ratio's eyes. “It would be, wouldn't it,” he says flatly, “I'll give him your regards.”

Three sharp knocks punctuate the pitter-patter of the rain outside. Strange. Ratio isn’t expecting any deliveries or guests at this hour. He peers through the peephole and freezes.
Three long years after his disappearance in Penacony, Aventurine stands at Ratio’s doorstep with a casual, lopsided grin.
Unthinkable. Unbelievable. Unimaginable.
Numb fingers open the door before caution can intervene. Aventurine, the eternal outlier, opens his mouth.
