Freshly divorced, Stede Bonnet decides it’s time to start anew. Leaving his cushy life as an entomology lecturer in New Zealand behind, he takes on the role of Insect Keeper at Harthall Zoo. His new co-workers are passionate and caring (albeit overworked and underpaid), and Stede finds himself slipping into a comfortable state where things just seem to make sense. But there’s always a calm before the storm, and soon Stede is entangled in a web of whispers where no one seems to know the truth.

Summary
Lt. Israel Hands is not having an easy time of it. The merger between police departments means he has to play nanny to a crew of sloppy misfits, while his captain gets chummy with one Stede Bonnet. Disrupting things even further, there's been a murder in town and the cowboy cop Jack Rackham is sent to help investigate. But nothing is quite what it seems, and Izzy finds himself falling into a dark place where he will ultimately have to choose: loyalty to his captain or the mysterious new stranger?
