Buck tensed up. “What do you know about it?”
“Nothing, nothing man, okay? I don’t know anything except what I’ve seen.”
“And what’s that?”
“I shouldn’t -”
“No, come on, what have you seen?”
“You don’t use your left hand unless you have to, you consistently favor your left leg, and you lean in closer a lot to hear people when they’re talking.”
“And what did that tell you?”
“That something happened to you, probably on the job, and probably not something you’ll recover from.”
OR Eddie joins the 118 after Buck is permanently disabled by an explosion at a call. Despite initial tensions, they learn just how important they can be to one another.

Summary
John took a step back at Simon’s step forward and visibly swallowed. Years and years of anger, hurt, and pain started to work their way through Simon’s body. He tried to swallow it back and tried not to blame John for feeling trapped in the past. But it still fucking hurt. The numerous nights he laid awake wondering if John was even alive, the hundreds of times Mary had broken down because she felt she failed as a sister. So many days he had spent mourning a friendship he thought long gone, only for them to see each other again in some dingy pub on a random Friday night.
“You don’t even know what you did do you,” Simon took another step forward, and John took a step back. “You don’t know the pain that you caused when you just fuckin’ vanished. You didn’t leave a note, you left your phone behind. You left fuckin’ nothin’. Nothin’ but that fuckin’ journal.” John’s eyes went impossibly wider and he opened his mouth to speak but Simon cut him off. “I mourned you.”

Summary
"Buck, just come stay with us,” Eddie said again.
Buck looked at him like he was crazy. “Where would I sleep?”
“Where are you sleeping here?” Eddie asked, not missing Buck’s guilty glance at the pillows and sheets piled on his couch that answered his question. “I guarantee you my couch is just as comfortable.”
Buck seemed to really consider it for the first time, jaw twitching as he weighed Eddie’s offer but then he shook his head sadly.
“You just feel bad for me, laid up and staying here alone.”
Eddie shrugged. “Is that a bad thing? Caring about you?”
OR
After the ladder truck explosion Buck moves in with Eddie and they both help each other heal in different ways.

Summary
Jaskier meets another bard who seems to be perfect for him in every way. Geralt doesn't like it.
“What surprises me,” Jaskier continued, “is that there’s a musician of such skill and I’ve never heard of him. He wasn’t at Oxenfurt, doesn’t compete in the tournaments and big festivals, has no reputation whatsoever. He knew all my songs but had none of his own to play. With talent like that – not to mention a face like that – he’d be a sensation. Melitele, Geralt, is this what envy feels like?”
I don’t know, Geralt thought. I’ve never been envious. Have I?
