The fish joke was just irritating enough and just lame enough (like, seriously, that’s barely even a pun) to get Sam over his anxiety. “Look, I don’t know how you found out about me and Mercedes, but we’re trying to keep things casual, so if you can just keep it to yourselves, uh, I’d owe you one.”
Santana and Brittany exchanged a look, and then turned back to Sam. “Like tic-tacs.” Brittany said, bobbing her head up and down in one exaggerated nod.
“Yeah, we’ll keep your secret if you keep ours.”
Sam knit his eyebrows together, partly confused by what secret he was meant to be keeping, and partly wondering if Brittany was expecting him to bring her tic-tacs. “What’s your’s?”
Brittany bobbed her head again. “Exactly.”

Set the summer between seasons two and three. Sam is just trying to enjoy his last summer in Lima and a secret romance with Mercedes. He keeps running into Santana and Brittany, who have a secret romance of their own -- it just takes Sam a while to realize that.
