“Y’know, I think I’d remember Eddie Munson being on my sidelines.”
When asked about the interaction later, he’d have no possible explanation for his bravado. Whether it was the pregame, the drinks he’d had in his hands since he’d arrived, or simply the pure adrenaline of looking up at those sweet puppy dog eyes, Eddie wasn’t sure. Whatever it was that allowed him to stay put despite the burn to run and hide likely came from the warmth that radiated from that smile.

Summary
Steve remembers graduation day well. He remembers the people, and the speeches, and the parties. He remembers everybody talking about how it was the beginning–the start of the rest of their lives. He remembers not feeling like that. Steve remembers feeling lost, and like the best years of his life were behind him. Sure the shimmer and shine of high school popularity had started to lose its appeal somewhere around the beginning of senior year, and he’d taken to abandoning the friendships that had always felt somewhat superficial in favor of spending most of his time with a band nerd who had looked down on him just as much as he’d looked down on her just a year before. But it turned out, when you stripped away the bullshit of high school cliques and were both forced to wear the same hideous sailor uniform for your summer job, things like petty high school rivalries could take a backseat.

Summary
The kiss is brief, only a second or two, not even long enough for Steve to really register what's happening before Eddie pulls away. Steve’s frozen in place, his arms still wrapped around Eddie.
Steve blinks down at him. "What?" he says stupidly. What?
Eddie closes his eyes, a weak smile on his lips. "Something to remember me by."
"You're not dying," Steve says. It feels like his mouth isn't attached to his brain anymore; the inside of his head is a dial tone.
"Of course I am," Eddie says, eyes still closed. "I'm dying right now."
"You're not, though." His voice keeps getting higher, for some reason. "You're not going to die here."
"Spare me the pity, Harrington, I know—"
"You're literally not dying right now." His whole body is hot. Is he sweating? "You lost some blood but they didn't get deep enough—I looked—you're going to be fine."
There's a pause. "I'm going to be fine?" Eddie asks, voice also going high and thin. "You're—sure?"
"Yes."
"Fascinating. Great. Are you—could you do me a favor, then, and maybe just—leave me here anyway?"
"What?" Steve says. The dial tone gets louder. "No. Why?"
"No reason," Eddie says, voice tight.
