The muscles around the corners of Spock’s mouth tensed ever so slightly. If he was to let it unfold on its own, the nightmare would wake Jim suddenly, leaving him in a state of anxiety, or a similarly unwelcome emotion. This would lead to him lying awake, and the negative emotions may carry over to the next day, even if he were able to go back to sleep.
This impairment of the captain’s mental state was not to be desired, Spock decided. The Enterprise required a captain that was well-rested and clear-headed, and as first officer it was part of his duties to ensure that was always the case.Series
