“Eight years ago,” he says. “Or maybe closer to nine. But that’s not…” He runs a hand through his hair and starts again. “In the immediate aftermath,” he says carefully, “I had a number of… strange experiences. Among them were recurring nightmares.”
Ryne’s stomach sinks. “What kind of nightmares?” she asks in a small voice.

The desert sky is quiet and the Light above hums an aetherial chorus, imperceptible to those who have been accustomed to it for the last century but noticeable for the people on this plane who have not been raised with it. Our scene has three set pieces that distinguish it from the rest of the waking sands: one, a smoking, derailed, overturned train car; two, a gunblade, covered in blood and stabbed precariously into the loose sand; three, what is left of a man in a long white coat. He is similar to the weapon: covered in blood and being buried in the sand with each gust of wind that piles grain by grain upon him.]
