“Where is General Nan Yang?” He demanded.

The deputy had a bit of Feng Xin’s temper. He didn’t tremble while Mu Qing held him by the collar. Whatever fear his expression held was one not born of Mu Qing’s rage in having to be here, looking for this man’s god. It was an expression Mu Qing might even have had reflected in his face had he not perfected himself nearly a millennia ago when godhood was still unobtainable and spending his life serving a palace was inevitable.

“We don’t know,” the deputy said.

800 years ago, Mu Qing searched for Xie Lian. Looking for Feng Xin too, was just a consequence of that.

He didn't have that same excuse now.

(in which Feng Xin goes missing, and Mu Qing decides he will be the one to find him.)

“You always fucking do this.” Feng Xin said with this voice that Mu Qing wished he didn't know. He wished he wasn't so familiar with that tone.

But Mu Qing didn't say anything.

“Leave me alone Feng Xin, I don't need you.” Mu Qing persisted, just wishing Feng Xin would leave. He leaned on his elbow as he watched Feng Xin angrily stand up.

“Fine then, I’ll leave.” Feng Xin said calmly, and suddenly, he didn't care for Mu Qing. His voice was set and his hands were numb by his sides as he looked at Mu Qing for just a moment longer before leaving.

Mu Qing didn't say anything, watching Feng Xin silently, holding back every word that he so badly wanted to say.

Then Feng Xin left, just as Mu Qing told him.

Or Mu Qing's journey of loving Feng Xin throughout a war.

“Red is fortuitous, A-Qing. We are not,” she whispered once when he had begged to have just a single red ribbon to put in his hair, the color looking so pleasing against the paleness of his skin and the coal of his hair. “It is an honor where we’ve been disgraced, a celebration when we’ve no worthwhile event…”

A criminal’s son. Mu Qing would never be worthy.

But Hong’er? Hong’er came to this earth in red, in between clock strokes of minute time where the stars had aligned for favor or misery. It was stupid prejudice that made people think the younger child was nothing more than a wretched omen.

A silent plea rings in Hua Cheng's ears, a final prayer that had, against all reason, been sent to him. It had resonated with a desire with which he’s intimately familiar, one he can't quite bring himself to ignore.

“Please don't let me leave them.”

    Or,

Mu Qing dies, and does not rest in peace.

    Summary

It ends like this: Xie Lian’s shackles shatter, Jun Wu screams.

The sound, furious and utterly terrifying, reverberates around them, “How dare you?” He throws a sword to the ground. “How dare you break it?”

The explosion of spiritual energy leaves deep gouges in the walls of the mountain, evidence of its power, of what it took to break it.

Xie Lian’s face hardens behind Hua Cheng’s, and Feng Xin thinks he looks more like the confident crown prince he used to know, always ready for a battle, a challenge. He raises his head to speak when Jun Wu turns, locking eyes with Mu Qing.

“You,” he says, tone sick and disgusting with something akin to an overwhelming fake kindness, “you’ll do.”

or, Feng Xin dies, comes back to life, and wrecks Mu Qing's life (not necessarily in that order)
