Bad enough that Starfleet was stealing his research and conscripting him, now he had to go off into a completely new environment, a fucking warship, without Hugh. All because the paperwork to transfer Hugh to Discovery hadn’t been put through yet. “Fine. My shuttle’s about to get here.”
“Paul…”
“It’s fine.”
“Paul.” Hugh was using that tone he used when Paul was getting too far into his own head and wasn’t listening to him, stern but still caring. “It’ll be three days, max. Get your stuff set up in our room, get settled into the engineering labs, and you can show me where the mess hall is when I get there.”

Summary
Herbert pronounces you healthy as a horse, save a massive bruise blooming across your face but, he says as he turns away, you had that already. You can see him visibly relax as he puts the stethoscope away, but you’re not quite sure why. Unconsciousness isn’t necessarily a good thing, but you could have been doing much worse. And now you’re back. You’re back, you were just unconscious, and you don’t know what to do with the worried look Herbert is giving you.

But nothing could hold Herbert West down if he didn’t want it to, so here he is, thirteen years down the line, covered in blood as usual, standing on Dan’s porch with a scowl and his bag.
