Mingyu turns to the side to start plating their dinner.
(Freshwater crab, Mingyu told him. He went out to get it yesterday for Minghao's birthday when Minghao mentioned the way he used to eat them as a kid when he lived in Anshan.
A little piece of home for you, Mingyu said.)
Mingyu is smiling to himself like the mountain of grief that lives in the human heart can be eased by him serving dinner on two pristine white plates, hands gentle with their food as he is with Minghao’s heart, unfalteringly.

“I’m sorry for such a terrible first impression,” Mingyu says for the first time in eight years, ears burning.
“Don’t worry about it,” Minghao assures with a smile. “It was cute. Why didn’t you talk to me?”
“I was just… embarrassed,” Mingyu admits quietly. Looking back on it, it’s silly. He avoided the world’s cutest guy for eight years because he was embarrassed for calling him pretty? “I feel like it was such a horrible first impression.”
“Not at all,” Minghao dismisses with a wave. “I wish we had talked more.” He seems to think for a moment. “But now we have all the time in the world, don’t we?”
“If that is what you wish, young master.”
Minghao's eyes are bright and the ends of his hair curl around his neck. The sun washes over him and breezes blow, rustling the flowers in Minghao's personally curated garden. He looks at Mingyu with those pretty brown eyes and smiles.
Mingyu runs away from the prettiest boy he's ever seen when they're 10. He's hired to be Duke Minghao's butler when they're 18.
He never gives his feelings a name. He's too afraid of loss if he gives it form.

when minghao is ravenous he cries and cries and cries, every tear tastes salty, feels bitter rolling down his cheeks. gentle as ever, mingyu tells him there's no reason to blame himself and that he will always be loved and he will always wait for minghao.
