Tommy held on tighter as he stared at one of the infected animals’ decaying corpses. He squeezed his eyes shut, wishing Wilbur could wrap his arms around him and make him completely disappear from the rest of the world.
He had never envied a forest before. He supposed that changed today.

Tommy wasn’t the same eleven year old boy that Wilbur had left behind five years ago. He was tall, built like a drain pipe, had huge dark circles that reflected Wilbur’s own, and what looked like a permanent scowl etched into his face. Every one of his movements were strained, as though he were constantly second-guessing himself.
But he was still Tommy. And Wilbur had still made a promise. And now the two brothers stood across from each other, looking at a once familiar person whose face had morphed into that of a stranger’s.
