Summary
Five Hargreeves doesn’t leave the Academy when he’s 13. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t become an assassin.
In which Reginald had bigger plans for Five and doesn’t let him go quite so easily, and the Hargreeves come together in 2019 only to discover that preventing the apocalypse involves helping more than one sibling.
November 10, 2002.
In one world, Five Hargreeves gets fed up with his father and his father’s inane rules. He storms out the front door and jumps to a future where he spends the next four decades living with smoke and ash, isolation and death.
In another world, Reginald Hargreeves has plans for Number Five. In that world, Reginald appeases him, at least temporarily. The day that follows finds Five on the floor of his father’s office, a monocle sitting over his left eye, gasping through unbidden tears.
“How do we stop it?” he asks.
Reginald stares down at his son. “You will be my scalpel.”
And, like the proverbial road not taken, it makes all the difference.
(Or, depending on your perspective, hardly any difference at all.)

Summary
Five is missing when everyone exits the elevator into the reset universe. Not long after, Diego discovers why.
Or Reginald takes to heart the saying to keep your friends close and your enemies closer. And so, in his brand-new reset universe, he builds in a son – an only child who is as intelligent as he is misanthropic. Diego can’t decide if Five is a willing participant or a captured pawn, but he’s sure as hell going to find out.

After a close call, Five makes a deal with Reginald to protect his siblings from the Sparrows. Allison shows how far she’ll go to save her brother when she has nothing to lose and proves that Five isn’t the only one who’s willing to throw his morals to the wind for family.

Summary
In which Five wonders why Diego didn’t look at him when he talked about his family loving each other, and Lila goes back to 2019 with the Hargreeves for not altogether altruistic purposes. Predictably, this doesn’t go well for Five. Less predictably, it leads to the Hargreeves finally learning a little bit about caring for themselves and each other.
Alternatively: According to some, there are seven types of love. There’s romantic love, of course, which seems to get the most attention for some reason. The other six types are of equal importance though. Love that’s playful. Love that’s practical. Universal love. Love of friends, of family, and of self.
Five wonders if anyone will ever feel one towards him.

Summary

The jump made everything worse.
The second they arrived in the mansion again, Diego cursed as something snapped in the leg the tractor ran over. His leg buckled, the pain tripling until it became a steady rhythm pounding through his head. As he staggered towards the table, the air buzzing around him, he gripped it hard enough it felt like his fingers would bleed. The world flickered in and out around him.
Five slurred something out—wit or bit or shit—and Diego lifted his head in time to see him fall backwards. Allison rushed over, catching him before he hit the ground, and he saw blood trickling down his face.
Vanya sank to the floor across the table, mumbling. When Klaus reached over to her, trying to steady her, she instead leant against his legs and took deep, rattling breaths that made Diego’s lungs hurt.
