When a rustle pulls him awake, it’s full dark. The last candle winked out some time before, and the only light remaining is a thin silver glow from the window. Bellamy blinks as his eyes adjust, taking in the wooden slats of the ceiling, then the quiet room. Beyond the door, he can hear men and women moving and whispering, but the sounds are muted: a hush of a prayer, a soft whimper of pain. He turns his head, expecting to see Clarke asleep beside him in the darkness. She’s not.
She is awake too, and she’s watching him. -

Summary
He was the only person who ever left her whose abandonment she'd truly earned, and he was the only one who kept coming back.
Events went differently in Season 6, after "Gone", and Buffy and her friends try to get back to what passes for normal on the Hellmouth. But wouldn't you know, as soon as they beat back one interdimensional baddie, the portents of yet another "dark power rising" start to appear. Unfortunately, Willow has seen that this time the demon threat will succeed in wiping Sunnydale off the map — especially if it can recruit the Slayer of Slayers to its side — and that's the best case scenario. This permanent WIP is intended as an alternate season of Buffy.
Note from the poster: This story is entirely by Anna S. (eliade), who has generously allowed me to post her fic to AO3. It is a classic of Buffy fanfic, unfinished and likely to remain so. It has only been available via Wayback Machine for the last several years, and deserves a wider readership. A readership which will soon discover a rich and compelling tale by a master of dialog, characterization, and plotting.

“We, my little kitten, know little about love,” Jaskier said with a flourish of his hand - Ciri giggled, and Yennefer rolled her eyes. “Love is like a pear. It is sweet, alright, and has a distinct shape. But try to define to me the shape of a pear.”
“You’re wrong,” Yennefer said, dryly. “Love is the ultimate desillusion about everything else. And few can afford to lose all of their illusions. There are those who volunteer for love, thinking that it will enrich their personal lives, but they are wrong. It is the opposite - love is poverty. Love is not having. In fact, love is the disappointment of what was once thought to be love.”
“That’s really bleak,” Jaskier said.
“And that’s really naive,” she replied, raising an eyebrow.
“Are you two in a competition?” Ciri asked, confused. “Because it sounds a lot like a very weird competition for someone’s love. Geralt, do you know who they’re competing for?”
Geralt, struck by a sudden bout of level-headedness, merely grunted in reply.
(Or: There are many ways to love as there are ways to die. Geralt of Rivia, by chance or choice, knows them all.)
