Story 7: Vita mia
Nicky’s mother guilt-trips him into bringing his boyfriend Joe to his sister's three-day wedding in Italy. The only problem is:
Joe doesn’t exist.
Nicky lied about having a boyfriend. Luckily, Nile knows just the guy to help out… “Joe” turns out to be a really, really good, fake boyfriend and it’s no hardship for Nicky to fake being madly in love with him.

“We have to get out of here!”
Nile’s panicked voice spurs him on. He is running to the dock, hoping the emergency pods are not too badly damaged by the ravage going on around them. Joe is half a step in front of him.
Nicky doesn’t know where everybody else is – most of the inhabitants got evacuated late yesterday afternoon, but there will still be dozens of people who didn’t make it onto the evac shuttles. Nobody expected disaster to strike quite so soon. Nicky knows pods have been leaving all day, but they thought they had at least two more days. There will be people trapped, families who are desperately trying to make it to the pods –
Nicky stops, tries to turn around, but Joe notices and grabs his wrist.
“Nicky, no! We need to go, now!”
“But there might be others, we should –”
“No!” Joe’s voice is sharp, and he tugs at Nicky’s arm desperately. “There is no time!”

“Yusuf,” said Yusuf, though introductions felt like an afterthought.
“Why are you due at Capella Vèrde three days hence, Yusuf?”
“I am to have my head cut off by a Genovese man.”
When he said the same at home, it earned him a huff of worn good humor from his elders and a Happens to the best of us, al-Tayyib. We’re going to miss you. But Nicolò eyed him over his shoulder and mildly said, “I see.”
