For most of the population, the losses and gains were minor, so the most exciting part was finding out what had occurred. Regulus had woken up on his 16th birthday relatively excited. Almost immediately, he had known what he had gained. When he discovered his loss, he promptly burst into silent tears. He was mute; he could not speak or make any sounds. In his opinion, it was not worth the gain of being able to read people’s minds.

He likes that it’s dark and thick and shiny, that it stretches down past his shoulders and curls at the ends just so. He likes that it’s long enough to be tied into braids when he’s gossiping with the girls, likes the way it settles around his ears and on his neck, like the way it feels when Remus pulls on it just so.
Then, in unison with his entire life falling apart, it’s gone.

Regulus did not need anyone else; he was always alone, and the pregnancy and the childbirth were not going to change that.
Because it was all his fault. He let his crush get the better of him, his love blinded him, and his weakness costed him a mistake that he could not erase.
It was foolish that Regulus would assume that he would remain alone forever. Because no matter what, his mate would always find him and bring him back to remind of the love they shared in their last years of youth.
