As Buck laid in the all too familiar hospital bed on Christmas Day, wrapped in a hospital gown, the phrase Christmas Orphan floated through his concussed mind and he prayed that the day would just end already.

    OR

Buck realizes he's going to be alone at Christmas and decides to cover a shift for another firefighter. He gets a bowling ball to the face for his troubles which leads to the reminder that he has family and that Eddie loves him too.

    Summary

By the time he registers that there is now blood rolling down the side of his face, Buck is being pulled up by the gunman, the weapon jammed against the side of his head and an arm wrapping around his neck as they look up to the loft, where the team stands, frozen in shock.

He'd hoped that they would've heard his warning and run, but clearly, they hadn't.

(Or, post-lawsuit, two people decide that today is the day to threaten the 118 at gunpoint.)

“He’s gonna’ be fine, they did scans, they said it’s just a scratch--”

“Just a scratch?” Eddie blinks incredulously. “‘Just a scratch’ doesn’t require stitches Evan! God, how could you be so irresponsible?! How the hell were you not watching him at the park?! How could you let him get all the way across the street without you?!”

    “Why are you so mad?”

“Because that bullet was supposed to hit me!” Eddie looks startled by his own words, but he barrels on. “You jumped in front of me, Buck. Why the fuck would you do that?”

“Why the fuck wouldn’t I?” Buck asks, as if the answer is obvious. Because even if he can’t remember right this second, he doesn’t doubt it’s something he would have done. “After you got shot by that sniper I swore I’d never let anything like that happen again if there was anything I could do to stop it.”

“Yeah, well, jokes on you,” Eddie says, taking a sip of his beer. “Bullet went through both of us anyway, didn’t it?”

    Summary

Buck doesn’t think that if he were to say, “I’m in a bad place”, that anyone would turn him away. Really, he doesn’t. The 118 has too many good, kind people for that.

But every time he wants to open his mouth, to say something, to reach out to Eddie or Bobby or Hen or Chim, he hears Eddie yelling, “you’re exhausting.”

    —you’re exhausting, you’re exhausting, you’re exhausting—

So each day he does his job and he laughs and he jokes and he pretends he’s the care-free goofball he’s always been. And each day he packs away his bruises and his worries, takes them home to his empty loft with its quiet rooms, and licks his wounds in silence.
