During Hop 31, it's not just Mav and Goose's plane that goes down. Ice and Slider crash too, and Mav is forced to keep all three men afloat until a rescue helicopter comes for them. Ice ends up with a badly damaged dislocated shoulder, Slider was nearly strangled to death because his parachute cords were tangled with a piece of flak, and Goose broke his neck and fractured his skull, forcing doctors to induce a medical coma. When Mav appears in court to present his findings, he chokes and is rushed to the hospital after experiencing secondary drowning. Viper is furious after finding out how the medical staff didn't treat Maverick, and reveals he was Duke Mitchell's wingman.
It turns out that the hop 31 disaster wasn't an accident, and during the graduation ceremony both pilot-RIO pairs (Iceman and Slider, Maverick and Goose) win the Top Gun Trophy.

There was an eerie silence in the shuttle on the way back from the senate, Anakin had given Mace little more than a passing glance since the Chancellor’s apprehension. They’d spent hours at the scene; Mace talking to the appropriate authorities as Anakin sat silent in the corner watching officials enter and leave the room in a blur. No one had known what to make of it. Chancellor Palpatine’s own office made a mass grave of half the kriffing council along with himself.
Had it been a mistake?
The decision to execute the Chancellor hadn’t come easy, it should have been easy. He was a Jedi, Palpatine had been a sith. That was practically Jedi 101: destroy the sith. But, it hadn’t been that simple for Anakin, not for a long time.

Anakin helps Mace instead of letting him fall out the window, order 66 is cancelled, and Obi-Wan swoops in like the perfect boyfriend Anakin didn't know he had to pick up the pieces. (They are in love)
